The Humble Ant

Devotional#1: 19 November 2016
“Consider her ways and be wise!”

The Book of Proverbs is full of exceptional word pictures that are applicable to modern readers.

One of our favorites, and the namesake of our site, is found in Proverbs 6 :

"Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest. How long
will you lay there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber,
and want like an armed man."

                                            - Proverbs 6:6

Unlike the hardworking ant, many people go through life under the assumption that hard work is too difficult, not worth their effort, or beneath them.

They may be forgetting that work was present in the Garden ofEden BEFORE sin ( Genesis 2 ). In addition, we have been directed to work as if we are working directly for God ( Ephesians 6 ).

We are working directly for God.

Under that rationale, we should work sacrificially and with an aim to make our final product an orderly, delightful creation - one suitable for the God we love.

The diligent effort of the Ant is the antithesis of the flippant, lazy sluggard.  We should honor our God and love our neighbor by working hard in all that we do..

Neither I, nor my wife and children, follow the way of the ant at all times, but we would be wise to do so! Indeed:

“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might…”

                                        - Ecclesiastes 9:10

An absolutely excellent Biblical Worldview book on the value and dignity of hard work: Booker T. Washington’s “ Up From Slavery .”
