Top 5 Sketching Tools for Kids!

1 March 2017
What should you put in your kid's art bag?  You asked.  Here's our list!

Have a budding artist who is outgrowing their crayons?

Want to contribute to our devotionals and earn money for the charity of your choice, but don't have the tools?

You might think this post is just a ploy to convince you to click on one of the Amazon links so that we can get a few cents from our Affiliate relationship with them, but rest assured, these products are exactly like the ones we use in our own tool kit!  In fact, we have used them to draw most of the artwork that is currently posted on our devotional site !

You'll notice that we have provided the free or inexpensive version of our top 5 products.  So if you don't exactly have the cashflow you need to fund yet another hobby, you can still get started quite nicely on the cheap!

We’ve picked 5 basic items that we put in our own toolkit while preparing for an off-site art trip.  We try very hard not to leave home without each of them.
Bag

Obviously, the first thing you'll need is a bag into which you can put everything else.  Any ole’ bag will do.  Sometimes we just throw our art supplies into the side pocket of a backpack or tote bag, or even just carry them by hand.   But, of course, a gallon-sized ziplock bag is just fine and it is our go-to art supply carrier of choice.  High-end version: Seriously?  Just use a ziplock.

Paper

You can’t do many sketches without any paper.  If you want to be really frugal, you can use the back of the page on the abundance of junk mail mailers that you probably just throw away.  You might also consider recycling the stack of misprinted work from your own printer.  Most school supply and craft stores have small sketch books.  We prefer the spiral kind with perforated edges because they lay flat when folded and it is easy to remove pages when desired. If you’d like to use our favorite, try these .

We usually toss everything except our sketchpad into the ziplock  bag and carry it together in a larger backpack on the way to our outdoor "studio."  (In case you’re wondering, I mean that we take our kit with us and go find a cool outdoor hideaway to observe and draw nature).
Colored Pencils

Our favorite mobile art medium is definitely colored pencils.  They don’t dry out or melt and they last for a really long time.  In addition, they can make a really sharp edge or a wide one, depending on the shape of your pencil tip - which is fairly easy to alter with a little practice.  If your family is like ours, you have plenty of free colored pencils scattered around your house.  You can usually find a fairly cheap version at any local school supplies or hobby store, but we like these
Blender Pencils

Blender Pencils are a very nice addition to your art kit.  They help to soften the edges of and shade your drawing.  Many artists just use their fingers, but we find that we cause random smears on our picture and our clothes if we use the finger method.  These “real” blender pencils are fairly inexpensive option, but some cheap alternatives are either a folded napkin or a q-tip.

Pencil Sharpener

You can bring along a small pocketknife if it is legal wherever you are planning on going for your mobile “art studio,” or you can borrow an old mascara sharpener from your make-up bag - but who wants to do that?  We recommend this version which is designed to work with colored pencils.  Note: Pencil sharpeners for regular lead pencils don’t usually work very well and can be pretty frustrating for your young artist!  We don't recommend them unless you've tried them at home first to confirm that they work!

It is really frustrating to draw a blue sky when you've broken the tip off of all of your blue pencils and have no sharpener on hand!

Art Partnerships!

Now that you know what to put in your art bag, feel free to use it to draw some stuff that you see in God's creation!

We can use it to come up with some art-based devotionals like these .

We are hoping that by sharing our contributors' ideas and artwork with our audience, we will add a degree of authenticity and richness to our products - as well as a means of sharing God's Word with a wider community!

We are looking for realistic illustrations of God's creation that point to some aspect of His nature. There is no restriction on media type (oil, canvas, pastel, etc). Just email us a 300dpi+ image of your artwork (preferably without text) and fill out
this  form!

A smart phone picture emailed here at the highest resolution that you an manage should work just fine!

Contributors will be given credit for their work and will be able to nominate Christian charities for any potential future proceeds to benefit.

Family Economics

Free Ebook Family Economy

New Book by Kevin Swanson

As usual, Kevin Swanson delivers a Biblically-based exhortation to Christian families.  He encourages us to run our family in a way that pleases God and reminds us that our Family's economy is one of our chief spiritual diciplines.

For example, Kevin says: "Within the family economy, there are plentiful opportunities for discipleship, family integration, and the preparation of our sons and daughters for their own family economies."

What a wonderful reminder to parents!

Just as we must make a habit of sharing God's word through Bible study, daily devotions, and prayer in order to train up the next generation in the way we should go, we must also train them up in the way that they should use God's money.

Heads up: Kevin may show you that many of the things that the secular world has told you are completely wrong! - don't say I didn't warn you!

Up From Slavery

20 December 2016
American Hero

In today's age of Fake News and Social Media-charged racial tension, this exceptional book, written by a Great American Christian Hero is well worth the paultry $2.50.
In the spirit of American Greats like Abe Lincoln, Ben Carson and Colin Powell, Dr Washington overcame the challenges of his meager upbringing as a child born on the dirt floor of his Master's slave cabin and rose to well-deserved worldwide prominence during his own lifetime.
The remarkable story of his journey from plantation slavery to well-renowned professional in the deep post-slavery south is full of valuable life-lessons suitable for this generation. Hard-work, Patience, Diligence, Philanthropy, and Perseverance are just a few of the ageless values that Dr Washington imparts on his readers.
Do NOT miss the opportunity to share this book with anyone who likes reading!
